When I saw a post in my FB newsfeed that Smaller and Smaller Circles is finally streaming online, I cannot contain my excitement. It has been the longest time since I've been looking for this movie.
Smaller and Smaller Circles is a book penned by F.H Batacan originally published in 2002 and made into a movie in 2017. The movie was starred by Nonie Buencamino, Sid Lucero, and Bembol Roco. The movie helmed by Raya Martin mostly stuck with the original story, albeit I find the scenes transitions quite fast.
If there's one thing I find lacking, it is the arc wherein Father Saenz and Father Lucero were trying to argue and establish that there is only one person who's doing all these sadistic killings and that the murders are related. To me, it was such a profound moment to contend that there is a serial killer and that this "westernized concept" can also happen in the Philippines, a country where religious beliefs and familial affiliations run deep. This is one of the earlier debates in the book which I wish could have been highlighted in the movie. It could be such a "light bulb" moment.
Nevertheless, I truly enjoyed the movie. This is the type of 90's thriller/suspense film I missed watching on television. Here's the link for the movie:
Stay Curious,
